| Amelie - 2001 - Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Alien 4) - 121mins - Starring Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, Lorella Cravotta and Serge Merlin. |
A kooky French romantic comedy from stylish director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Amelie (Audrey Tautou) is a quiet and shy young lady who sets herself the task of making other people happy. Of course the real issue is what will make Amelie happy, and her good deeds are rewarded when she discovers her soul mate in the process. The direction is superb, with the viewer constantly treated to weird and wonderful colours, images, noises and camera angles; all of which compliment the eccentric storyline to perfection. It has been criticised by some for being a bit too sentimental, but come on, even the most hardened of hearts enjoys a bit of schmaltz every now and again! |

| Chungking Express - 1994 - Directed by Kar Wai Wong - 103mins - Starring Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Faye Wong. |
Hong Kong set romantic comedy, following the adventures of two lovelorn cops. Takeshi Kaneshiro, who celebrates his birthday by himself eating expired tins of pineapple and then stumbles across the beautiful Brigitte Lin in a bar. She has spent her day in desperate shoot-outs, having been double crossed in a drugs deal. They make a strange couple in a crazy city, but somehow they connect. This story is then interwoven with that of another lonely couple, involving cop Tony Leung Chiu-Wai who is being 'studied' by Midnight Express takeaway waitress Faye Wong. She regularly breaks into his apartment and changes his furnishing, with the cop not seeming to notice a thing. It really is as weird as it sounds, but it all proves to be a very stylish affair thanks to some extremely clever direction. The result is entertaining, while also providing a social commentary on capitalism in the Hong Kong setting with the real worth of goods and people examined. The soundtrack is also very excellent, with 'California Dreaming' being a theme. |

| Reality Bites - 1994 - Directed by Ben Stiller - 99mins - Starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Renee Zellweger. |
This amiable relationships comedy drama is held as a prime example of Generation X film making (e.g. the generation that followed the Baby Boom after the Second World War who grew-up with the end of the cold war and the fall of the Berlin Wall.) A group of college friends have to make decisions about their future lives, with Winona Ryder courted by Yuppie Ben Stiller, while still having feelings for slacker musician Ethan Hawke. The film ticks all the ‘issues’ of the day boxes, including AIDS, MTV, Homosexuality, Globalisation and drugs, while throwing in a very cool soundtrack including World Party, Crowded House, Squeeze, The Knack, New Order, Lenny Kravitz, U2 and Lisa Loeb. The attractive cast are easy to watch and while it only scratches at the surface of the issues it covers, it does remain an enjoyable and romantic movie. |

The Tao of Steve - 2001 - Directed by Jenniphr Goodman - 84mins - Starring Donal Logue, Greer Goodman, Ayelet Kaznelson, John Hines and Nina Jaroslaw. |
A clever indie-comedy in which Dex (Donal Logue) believes that he has perfected a philosophy (The Tao of Steve) that will win him the heart of any woman. It's called Steve as apparantly all Steve's are cool e.g. Steve McGarrett (from Hawaii Five-O) and Steve McQueen. The theory appears to work as he always seems to be bedding women who wouldn’t ordinarily give him a second glance, but he discovers a flaw in his plans when he does actually fall in love with someone who finds out about his tricks. The dialogue is full of great one-liners with the fairly unknown cast all putting in excellent performances. |

| Tears of the Black Tiger - 2000 - Directed by Wisit Sartsanatieng - 110mins - Starring Chartchai Ngamsan, Stella Malucchi, Arawat Ruangvuth and Supakorn Kitsuwon. AKA: Fah talai jone |
It's rather difficult to describe this classy Thai western. The story is basically that of a love triangle between Rumpoey, the daughter of a rich city governor, who is being forced into an arranged marriage to Kumjorn the local police captain, while also rekindling her affections for her childhood sweetheart-turned bandit Dum [The Black Tiger]. Meanwhile Kumjorn is out trying to capture The Black Tiger who is wanted by the police. It sounds straightforward, but director Sartsanatieng uses a kitsch psychedelic colour scheme, flashbacks, location and staged settings, some rather gruesome shoot-outs and a cast that are as camp as Christmas, in order to conjure up a lot more than your standard western. The result is a very stylish and entertaining film that kind of defies categorization and really must be seen to be believed. |
