The James Bond Movies - James Bond has been providing exciting action-packed blockbusting movies since Sean Connery first donned a tuxedo in 1962’s ‘Dr No‘. Since then the franchise has continued to produce an excellent series of films, with exotic locations, glamorous leading-ladies and a succession of evil villains plotting the world’s destruction. They say everyone has their favourite Bond, from the tough Sean Connery, suave Roger Moore, ‘new-man’ Timothy Dalton, charming Pierce Bronsnan and beefy Daniel Craig. Perhaps the most romantic of the Bond movies was the one outing for George Lazenby in 1969’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service‘. Despite limited acting training Lazenby makes a fine 007, who is actually so smitten by the charms of his leading lady, Diana Rigg, that Bond marries her! The weepy ending combined with wondering Louis Armstrong ‘We have all the time in the World’ soundtrack make this a perfect date movie.

The Bourne Identity - 2002 - Directed by Doug Liman (Mr & Mrs Smith) - 119mins - Starring Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Brian Cox, Julia Stiles, Clive Owen and Chris Cooper. Based on the novel by Robert Ludlum
Matt Damon is found in the Mediterranean having lost his memory and his identity. While he tries to rediscover who he is the CIA, worried that he may cause the department embarrassment in his current state, attempt to send him back to the bottom of the ocean. It turns out that Bourne is a top overt agent with a lot of dangerous knowledge in his head. The movie then develops into a type of James Bond big budget action thriller, but with Damon’s character bringing slightly more realism to the role than the glamorous Bond figure. Bourne is aided in his attempts to disappear by ‘Run, Lola, Runs’ Franka Potente, who proves a resourceful and romantic partner. The stunning European locations make for some interesting action set-pieces - of which there are plenty. Followed by sequels The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)… with more to follow I’m sure.

The Last of the Mohicans - 1992 - Directed by Michael Mann - 108mins - Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, Wes Studi and Russell Means.
This epic love story is set during the colonial days of America when ruling British forces came under attack from French armies to contend for land and trading rights. Into this battle, the Native American Indians found themselves caught in the middle, with some deciding to join the French to revenge the brutal British tyranny, while others just want to go to Kentucky and keep away from the stupid settlers who keep killing each other! Daniel Day-Lewis’s Hawkeye is one such native American who decides to get away while the going is good, but on his departure he comes across a British convoy being slain by another tribe of Indians (in the pay of the French) and spotting a couple of attractive ladies in the mix decides to come to the rescue. Sending the other bunch running Hawkeye meets Cora (Madeleine Stowe) the daughter of a British Colonel and agrees to lead her and the other survivors through the wilderness to her father’s regiment. Being a Michael Mann film (Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice) there are plenty more ambushes and battles still to come, but overall this is basically a love story, with some splendid scenery and a wonderful score (it won the Oscar for Best Sound). I don’t think anyone will be disappointed, there’s enough romance for the ladies and enough fist fights from the blokes (in fact in one scene Hawkeye runs on slow motion with a musket in each hand shooting down the enemy!)

Memphis Belle - 1990 - Directed by Michael Caton-Jones (Basic Instinct 2) - 102mins - Starring Matthew Modine, Sean Austin, Billy Zane, Eric Stoltz, D B Sweeney, Jane Horrocks, Harry Connick Jr., John Lithgow.
Memphis Belle was the famous US Air Force B-17 bomber that was based in England and used in bombing missions over Germany during the Second World War. This movie tells a romanticised version of the story of it’s 25th and final raid in 1944. It really tugs at the heart strings as it examines the lives, relationships and loves of it’s young American flight crew. The result feels like a combination of clichés from 1940’s war movies all bolted together, but the excellent cast, good direction and stunning scenery make this extremely watchable.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - 1991 - Directed by Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld) - 143mins - Starring Kevin Costner, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater and Alan Rickman.
A dashing Robin Hood (Costner) battles an enjoyably nasty Sheriff of Nottingham (Rickman) while winning the heart of Maid Marian (Mastrantonio). There really is something for everyone in this box-office smash hit, with romance, action, witty dialogue and Bryan Adams “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” soundtrack - well perhaps we could have done without that last one! Sean Connery even has a brief cameo appearance as King Richard (reportedly being paid $250,000 for a couple of days work), and for the ladies you get to see Costner's backside as he has a naked swim in a lake (although a body double was apparently used!).

The Wraith - 1986 - Directed by Mike Marvin - 92mins - Starring Charlie Sheen, Nick Cassavetes, Sherilyn Fenn, Randy Quaid and Matthew Barry.
Often derided for its 80’s soundtrack, naff special effects and simplistic storyline, this movie is a real guilty pleasure. Pretty-boy Sheen stars as a mystical avenging angel with a suped-up Dodge Turbo Interceptor seeking revenge on a car-jacking gang that bully their way around a small desert town. Randy Quaid is the town sheriff trying to figure out what is going on, while Sherilyn Fenn is the town beauty caught between bad boy Cassavetes and the mysterious Sheen. The underrated script is full of clever dialogue and quips from writer/director Mike Marvin, who loads the film with fast cars, big guns and lots of macho posturing. What more do you possibly need? Look out for Happy Days actor turned director Ron Howard's younger brother Clint Howard in a supporting role.
