Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 2004 - Directed by Michael Gondry (Human Nature) - 108mins - Starring Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood.
Jim Carrey stars in this clever romantic comedy, made by the brilliant pairing of director Michael Gondry (Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep etc.) and writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation etc.) The film revolves around a new process being tested by Tom Wilkinson and his science company, Lunaca Inc, that can erase bad memories. Kate Winslet, starring as Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, decides to go ahead with the treatment in order to wipe out her memories of Jim. Hearing this, the heartbroken Carrey signs up for the same process, in an attempt to escape his lovelorn unhappiness. Of course troubled relationships aren’t all bad, and once some of the recent fights and upsets are removed from his mind, Carrey realises that he really loves Winslet, and becomes desperate to cling on to his memories of her before they are all erased. It’s a crazy story, executed excellently, with great dialog, wonderful dreamlike sequences and excellent performances from everyone involved.

Four Weddings and a Funeral - 1994 - Directed by Mike Newell - 117mins - Starring Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Kirsten Scott Thomas, James Fleet, Simon Callow, John Hannah, Corin Redgrave and Rowan Atkinson.
Golly Gosh, this very British Romantic Comedy was a real smash hit! From the pen of Richard (Love Actually) Curtis, the plot revolves around a single Hugh Grant who stumbles through the weddings and social occasions of his friends while bumping into another guest Andie MacDowell, with whom he has fallen in love. Unfortunately, Hugh never seems to get the opportunity to declare his attraction, which leads to some fantastic comic moments as well as a genuinely heart-warming finale. Versatile director Mike Newell does a fantastic job at keeping you constantly entertained - he went on to direct Donnie Brasco (1997), Pushing Tin (1990) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005).

Star Profile: Hugh Grant born 1960 in London. This Oxford education British actor is often seen in foppish roles. After the success of Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Grant was offered some big budget Hollywood movies such as Nine Months (1995), Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) and American Dreamz (2006). However it is his British (albeit sometimes Hollywood funded) movies in which he usually produces his best work such as Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), About a Boy (2002) and Love Actually (2003). In 1995 he was arrested for committing a lewd act in a car on Sunset Boulevard. This led to his separation from partner Elizabeth Hurley, while Divine Brown the prostitute involved starred in a video ‘Taken for Granted’ with a Hugh Grant look-alike!

Green Card - 1990 - Directed by Peter Weir (The Truman Show) - 107mins - Starring Gerard Depardieu, Andie MacDowell, Bebe Neuwith, Robert Prosky and Gregg Edelman.
Gerard Depardieu performs his first major English language role in this sweet romantic comedy. He stars as a French musician who needs a Green Card in order to play in America. Andie MacDowell meanwhile is a horticulturist who has her dreams set on an apartment with a large greenhouse that is only available to married couples. A deal is therefore struck between the pair and a marriage of convenience results in both of them getting their wishes and then going their own way… that is until US immigration decides to investigate. Forced back together they have to fake a relationship in order to fool the authorities. This leads to some extremely funny dialogue as stories are confused and jumbled up - but hey, you guessed it, they both fall for each other during this forced union.

Groundhog Day -1992- Directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack)- 103mins - Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliot, Stephen Mobolowsky and Brian Doyle-Murray.
There are few people who can play a self-centred grump better that Bill Murray and this movie provides the perfect vehicle for his gripes. He stars as a TV weatherman forced to go to the small town of Punxsutawney for their annual Groundhog Day festivities. His despise for the towns folk, his staff and general humanity at large are ever evident, until he wakes the following morning to find that he is back at the start of the day. In fact, every morning he wakes he finds that he has returned to the 2nd of February. Despite numerous efforts to escape the snowed in town he continues to find himself in this loop and it doesn’t matter who he tries to explain this predicament to the following day he finds himself back at square one. This situation lends itself nicely to some very humorous situations, with Bill attempting suicide in a number of different manners, learning to play the piano and chatting up his producer Andie MacDowell. In the end it all turns a bit Capra-esque with good deeds proving his salvation.

Star Profile: Andie MacDowell born 1958 in Gaffney, South Carolina. American leading lady although rather overlooked compared to contermpories such as Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan. Starting out as Jane in the 1984 Tarzan epic ‘Greystoke’ she went on to star in a number of excellent romantic comedies such as Green Card (1990), Groundhog Day (1992) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). Despite a few duds in the in the mid 90’s (Michael Keaton vehicle Multiplicity and John Travolta vehicle Michael), she returned with some excellent acting performances in film noir The End of Violence (1997) and Hollywood satire The Muse (1999) before the decent roles seemed to dry up in the 2000’s.

Joe Verses the Volcano - 1990 - Directed by John Patrick Stanley - 1990 - Starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Amanda Plummer, Nathan Lane and Ossie Davis.
This romantic fantasy was the first paring of Tom Hanks with Meg Ryan, who went on the star in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail together. Here Tom Hanks plays the loser Joe Banks who discovers that he only has 6 months to live. Not wanting to spend these last precious moments stuck in his dead-end job he accepts an offer from businessman Lloyd Bridges to live like a king on a tropical island before jumping into the volcano to appease the gods. It all sounds loopy yet straight-forward enough but these plans are somewhat thwarted when he falls in love with Meg Ryan on the way to the island. This star pairing then adds that touch of class to an otherwise average movie.

Mannequin - 1987 - Directed by Michael Gottlieb (Mr Nanny) - 95mins -Starring Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall, James Spader, G W Bailey, Meshach Taylor and Estelle Getty.
A fun romantic comedy with a failing department store (ready to be sold down the river by a nasty James Spader) saved by some impressive window displays! And just what made these displays so impressive? Well it turns out that one of the shop mannequins is possessed by an Egyptian princess (Cattrall) who comes to life at night and helps window dresser Andrew McCarthy come up with some stunning ideas. The fun cast includes Police Academy’s G W Bailey as a Rambo obsessed store security guard. Followed by an inferior sequel Mannequin on the Move in 1991, starring Kristy Swanson and William Ragsdale.

Seven years later and Grant is remarried to Gail Patrick when his original wife returns from the desert island on which she has been stranded! Pretty in Pink - 1986 - Directed by Howard Deutch (Getting Even With Dad) - 96mins -Starring Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer, Harry Dean Stanton, James Spader.
An entertaining teen-angst comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Uncle Buck, Home Alone etc.). It stars Molly Ringwald as a poor girl who is isolated at school for wearing odd clothes and driving a tatty car. With the prom approaching she worries about being asked until one of the rich kids (Andrew McCarthy) asks her to accompany him. What are his motives and how will Molly brush up from the big day? The cast is excellent, especially Harry Dean Stanton as Molly’s father and the cool soundtrack, as the title suggests, includes the great “Pretty in Pink” by The Psychedelic Furs.

He likes her so much that he asks to hire her for the week to accompany him at his social events while he is in town. There follows a lot of getting her kitted out with the right clothes and learning the social etiquette etc. while Gere slowly falls for her charms - and who wouldn’t? The film made Julia Roberts a star and gave Roy Orbison another hit for his soundtrack song “Oh, Pretty Woman”.

Reality Bites - 1994 - Directed by Ben Stiller - 99mins - Starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Renee Zellweger.
This amiable relationships comedy drama is held as a prime example of Generation X film making (e.g. the generation that followed the Baby Boom after the Second World War who grew-up with the end of the cold war and the fall of the Berlin Wall.) A group of college friends have to make decisions about their future lives, with Winona Ryder courted by Yuppie Ben Stiller, while still having feelings for slacker musician Ethan Hawke. The film ticks all the ‘issues’ of the day boxes, including AIDS, MTV, Homosexuality, Globalisation and drugs, while throwing in a very cool soundtrack including World Party, Crowded House, Squeeze, The Knack, New Order, Lenny Kravitz, U2 and Lisa Loeb. The attractive cast are easy to watch and while it only scratches at the surface of the issues it covers, it does remain an enjoyable and romantic movie.

Star Profile: Meg Ryan born in 1961 in Fairfield, Connecticut. Married to actor Dennis Quaid 1991-2001 (divorced). Throughout the late 1980's & 1990's Meg Ryan really was the first choice for romantic leading ladies. She starred in a succession of hits including When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), When a Man Loves a Woman (1994), French Kiss (1995), City of Angels (1998) and You've Got Mail (1998). Box Office success has been a bit less forthcoming in recent years, with sexy thriller In the Cut (2003) and the high society comedy drama The Women (2008) her most notable roles... not forgetting the on-set romance started with Russell Crowe during the filming of the thriller Proof of Life (2000).

Splash - 1984 - Directed by Ron Howard - 110mins - Starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, Eugene Levy, John Goodman and Bobby DiCicco.
A top rate, if rather fishy, romantic comedy in which Tom Hanks falls in love with the beautiful Daryl Hannah. But what Tom doesn't know is that if Daryl is touched by salt water she will become a mermaid! The supporting cast is excellent with Eugene Levy as the scientist that suspects Hannah’s aquatic tendencies and John Candy as Tom Hanks brother (go figure!) who unsurprisingly but rather entertainingly gets beaten at a game of squash at one point. The movie was followed by a very average TV Movie sequel 1988 named ‘Splash, Too’ with the two leads replaced by Todd Waring and Amy Yasbeck.

The Terminal - 2004 - Directed by Steven Spielberg - 129mins - Starring Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diego Luna, Eddie Jones and Stanley Tucci.

Based on the real life case of Alfred Merhan, an Iranian man who lived for 11 years at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. This reworking is directed by Steven Spielberg who gives the story a light romantic make-over with Tom Hanks playing an Eastern European who finds himself trapped at New York’s JFK airport due to bureaucratic rules. During the weeks that he’s trapped the lovable Hanks learns the language, befriends the terminal staff and falls for the charms of the beautiful air stewardess Catherine Zeta-Jones. There is some good banter between Tom and the security guards keeping him trapped, with an inevitable feel-good ending.

Three Men and a Baby - 1987 - Directed by Leonard Nimoy (yes the guy who played Spock in Star Trek!) - Starring Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson, Nancy Travis, Margaret Colin and Philip Bosco.
A fun remake of the hit French comedy ‘Three Men and a Cradle’, in which 3 swinging bachelors are left to look after an infant. The US remake features top stars (at that time) Selleck, Guttenberg and Danson who after their initial reluctance soon become doting foster-fathers - despite the messy nappies and nocturnal screaming! The film was followed in 1990 with a sequel Three Men and a Little Lady. All the stars of the original movie return, with the premise that they have been living with baby-turned-infant Mary and her mother Sylvia (Nancy Travis) for the past 5 years. Now Sylvia wants to take Mary and move to the UK to marry English gent Christopher Cazenove. Selleck, Guttenberg and Danson all head off in pursuit desperate to win the affections of Sylvia and save Mary from English boarding school!

Star Trivia: Steve Guttenberg born in Brooklyn, New York in 1958. Married to Denise Boxler (Linda from Evil Dead 2) from 1988-1992. Although rather overlooked in favour of stars of the 1980's such as Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford, Steve Guttenberg starred in a string of massive hits throughout that decade. Movies included Police Academy 1 to 4, Cocoon & sequel, Short Circuit, The Bedroom Window and 3 Men and a Baby & sequel. Even Steve is quoted as saying "I'm not bragging but my movies have grossed well over a billion dollars". Unfortunately opportunities throughout the 1990's were not so forthcoming - but his attempt to become an action hero in the 1998 movie 'Airborne' is worth a look, even if just for comic value.

When Harry Met Sally - 1989 - Directed by Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men) - 96mins - Starring Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby.
This fun relationships comedy stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as on-off friends since college who start to struggle from becoming romantically involved now that they are both older and divorcees. Is it actually possible for a man and woman to just be friends without sex getting in the way? The script has some great Woody Allen-esque dialog, not least Meg Ryan’s fake orgasm in a dinner - I’ll have what she’s having! Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are also excellent at the pairs confidants.

Star Profile:Tom Hanks (Born 9th July 1956) performances as romantic characters really epitomise the perfect male lead for a movie to watch on a date. Women love his wholesome good looks, high morals and the fact that his characters are generally thoroughly decent chaps who you could happily bring home to meet the parents. Men on the other hand have to respect him for his decent acting ability and the fact that he manages to keep getting his end away with the lovely Meg Ryan. The Meg Ryan trilogy: Joe Verses the Volcano (1990), the first paring of Hanks with Meg Ryan has Ryan playing multiple roles as a depressed Hanks heads to a volcano to jump in. Sleepless in Seattle (1993) has the duo on fine form with Hanks young son Jonah match making for his widowed father. You’ve Got Mail (1998) has the couple reunited again, this time as business rivals who unknowingly fall in love with each other over the internet. This film is actually a remake of the excellent The Shop Around the Corner (1940) in which enemies James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan fall in love with each other as anonymous pen pals.
