All the Right Moves - 1983 - Directed by Michael Chapman - 91mins - Starring Tom Cruise, Lea Thompson, Craig T Nelson, Christopher Penn, Charles Cioffi and Paul Carafotes.
An excellent example of a sports movie. Even if you don’t like American Football or Tom Cruise, you can’t help feeling for his character in this gripping drama. Tom stars as Stefan a rising college football star desperate to win a sports scholarship and escape the grim Pennsylvanian steel town in which he has grown up. Problems exist with his hardnosed and ambitious coach played by an excellent Craig T. Nelson and Stefan’s tough working class father. There’s also the issue of his musically gifted girlfriend, played by the rather sexy Lea Thompson, who doesn’t want to be left alone if Stefan leaves.

Star Profile: Tom Cruise - Born 1962 in Syracuse, New York. Married to actresses Mimi Rogers (1987-1990), Nicole Kidman (1990-2001) and Katie Holmes (2006 to present). He was the first actor in history to star in five consecutive films that grossed over $100 million in the USA: A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Mission: Impossible (1996) and Jerry Maguire (1996).

The Bodyguard - 1992 - Directed by Mick Jackson (Volcano) - 124mins - Starring Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston, Gary Kemp and Bill Cobbs.
Kevin Costner stars as the expert bodyguard brought in when singer/actress Whitney Houston starts receiving threatening letters. She’s been Oscar nominated and wants to continue her public appearances to keep her profile up, but the risks keep rising as attempts on her life are made. Directed Mick Jackson keeps us guessing as to who is behind the threats, while the two leads make a nice romantic couple when they finally fall for each other. Houston proves that she certainly has singing ability with the resulting soundtrack album, featuring the hit single “I Will Always Love You” - her acting ability is somewhat more in doubt.

Brief Encounter - 1945 - Directed by David Lean - 86mins - Starring Trevor Howard, Celia Johnson, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey and Cyril Raymond.
A beautiful romantic classic that is based on a very simply premise; Two strangers (both married) meet at a railway station and fall in love. They have some brief romantic moments together then sadly have to go their separate ways. It's all very British stiff-upper lip material, but Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson are fantastic as the leads which combined with a Noel Coward script (it was based on his play 'Still Life') and the wonderful Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto score, there won't be a dry eye in the house by the end

Casablanca - 1942 - Directed by Michael Curtiz (White Christmas) - 112mins - Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Paul Henreid and Sydney Greenstreet.
Not just one of the best date movies, this is possibly one of the best movies of all time! Set during the Second World War, Rick Blaine (Bogart) owner of a nightclub in French Morocco finds himself reunited with his old flame Ingrid Bergman. He still loves her, but she is now married to Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Bogart now must decide whether to maintain his stance of co-operating with the authorities, to chase after his former lover or to risk his life to help the allies war effort. It really is a great piece of film making with classic dialogue, characters and the excellent Dooley Wilson singing “As Time Goes By”. Here’s looking at you kid.

Cocktail - 1988 - Directed by Roger Donaldson (Species) - 103mins - Starring Tom Cruise, Bryan Brown, Elisabeth Shue, Kelly Lynch, Lisa Banes, Laurence Luckinbill and Kelly Lynch.
The title of this movie real gives the storyline away. A young Tom Cruise arrives in New York, drops out of the business school to which he had enrolled and decides instead to be taught how to make the sexiest cocktails in Manhattan by old pro Bryan Brown. The young protégé and master end up competing to impress the ladies until Tom falls for the real deal in Elisabeth Shue. Okay so it’s flashy, empty, sexist 1980’s drivel - but you just can’t help lovin’ it!

Every Time We Say Goodbye - 1986 - Directed by Moshe Mizrahi - 98mins - Starring Tom Hanks, Christina Marsillach, Benedict Taylor, Gila Almagor and Anat Atzmon.
A little known early movie in the career of Tom Hanks. In this wartime romantic drama he plays a young World War 2 pilot who meets a beautiful Jewish girl while recovering from a leg injury in Jerusalem. Her family doesn’t approve of the romance as they only allow marriage within the faith. As a result it develops into a classic, (if sometimes a tad corny) tragic love story with Spanish actress Cristina Marsillach perfect as Tom’s co-star.

Ghost - 1990 - Directed by Jerry Zucker (Ruthless People) - 122mins - Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn.
A strange romantic comedy in that the couple in question, Moore’s Molly and Swayze’s Sam, are separated at the start when Sam is killed by a mugger. Sam however remains on earth as a ghost trying to figure out for what reason he has been left to remain. He does discover that he can communicate to Sam through Whoopi Goldberg’s Oda Mae Brown, who provides great light relief as the fake mystic who is shocked to find that she can suddenly hear the dead. Key Moment: Making love while Molly is using the pottery wheel. Key Soundtrack: Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers.

I Wake Up Screaming - 1941 - Directed by H.Bruce Humberstone - 82mins - Starring Victor Mature, Betty Grable, Carol Landis, Laird Cregar and Alan Mowbray.
A cracking film-noir starring Betty Grable and Victor Mature (both bursting with smart one-liners), with Mature desperately trying to prove his innocence when Grable's sister (Carol Landis) is found murdered. Being Number One suspect he is forced to go on the run, but soon finds that the physically and mentally threatening cop Laird Cregar is hot on his trail and being convinced of his guilt he wants the death penalty as Mature’s punishment. Despite this premise it is still noir-lite material, with a heavy emphasise placed on the romantic lead-players ('Somewhere over the Rainbow' is the reoccurring soundtrack), but it still contains enough twists and turns to make a gripping story. Strong support also comes from Alan Mowbray hamming it up as a has-been actor and the always good Elisha Cook Jr, as the suspicious apartment porter - with the result being so much better than most modern thrillers.

The Last of the Mohicans - 1992 - Directed by Michael Mann - 108mins - Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, Wes Studi and Russell Means.
This epic love story is set during the colonial days of America when ruling British forces came under attack from French armies to contend for land and trading rights. Into this battle, the Native American Indians found themselves caught in the middle, with some deciding to join the French to revenge the brutal British tyranny, while others just want to go to Kentucky and keep away from the stupid settlers who keep killing each other! Daniel Day-Lewis’s Hawkeye is one such native American who decides to get away while the going is good, but on his departure he comes across a British convoy being slain by another tribe of Indians (in the pay of the French) and spotting a couple of attractive ladies in the mix decides to come to the rescue. Sending the other bunch running Hawkeye meets Cora (Madeleine Stowe) the daughter of a British Colonel and agrees to lead her and the other survivors through the wilderness to her father’s regiment. Being a Michael Mann film (Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice) there are plenty more ambushes and battles still to come, but overall this is basically a love story, with some splendid scenery and a wonderful score (it won the Oscar for Best Sound). I don’t think anyone will be disappointed, there’s enough romance for the ladies and enough fist fights from the blokes (in fact in one scene Hawkeye runs on slow motion with a musket in each hand shooting down the enemy!)

A Matter of Life and Death - 1946 - Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger - Starring David Niven, Kim Hunter, Roger Livesey, Raymond Massey and Richard Attenborough - AKA Stairway to Heaven.
Yet another fantastic Powell and Pressburger collaboration that starts with a young RAF Airman, David Niven, bailing out of his crashing plane without a parachute to his certain death. Mysteriously he survives the fall and is nursed back to health by American radio operator Kim Hunter - with whom he falls in love. Problems arise however, when dead French Aristocrat Marius Goring turns up to take Niven away to Heaven. Apparently Niven had missed his date with death after falling from the plane, due to a particularly heavy fog. Niven challenges his death sentence, claiming that his life has irreversibly altered during his 'borrowed days', and that he and Hunter are now in love. Goring returns to Heaven for instructions, and a date is set for a trial. Throughout the film we are treated to breathtaking visuals, defying the fact that the film was made during the 1940’s. The real World is shown in glorious Technicolor, while the 'other-side' is clinical black and white. The blending between the two Worlds is truly splendid, and the court room in the skies quite spectacular. We won't spoil the ending, but rest assured that you that you'll be in awe each time you watch it.

Star Profile: David Niven - Born 1910 in London. Married to Primula Rollo (1940-1946) and Hjordis Paulina Tersmeden (1948 until his death in 1983). He died on the same day as his Matter of Life and Death co-star Roger Livesey. He was recommended by Ian Fleming to play James Bond, but the producers considered him too old for the role. He did, however, play James Bond in the spoof movie Casino Royale in 1967. His son David Niven Jr. has done some acting, most notable the role of the British Foreign Minister in Rush Hour 3.

An Officer and a Gentleman - 1982 - Directed by Taylor Hackford (The Devil’s Advocate) - 124mins - Starring Richard Gere, Debra Winger, David Keith, Louis Gossett Jr., and David Caruso.
A loner with attitude Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enlists for Naval Flight School. Once there he is put through his paces by the hardnosed Sergeant Foley (Oscar winning Louis Gossett Jr.) and falls in love with local mill worker Paula Pokrifika (Debra Winger). It’s full of macho posturing, but Gere does look rather fetching in his spotlessly white uniform and you’ll have the theme tune “Up Where We Belong” (sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes) stuck in your head for weeks.

Pretty Woman - 1990 - Directed by Garry Marshall (Runaway Bride) - 117mins - Starring Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Ralph Bellamy, Jason Alexander.
A ruthless businessman (Richard Gere) hires a hooker during his visit to LA. He soon finds that he’s got a lot more than he bargained for with the savvy Julia Roberts. He likes her so much that he asks to hire her for the week to accompany him at his social events while he is in town. There follows a lot of getting her kitted out with the right clothes and learning the social etiquette etc. while Gere slowly falls for her charms - and who wouldn’t? The film made Julia Roberts a star and gave Roy Orbison another hit for his soundtrack song “Oh, Pretty Woman”.

Romeo & Juliet - 1996 - Directed by Baz Luhrmann [Moulin Rouge!, Australia] - 120mins - Starring Claire Danes, Leonardo DiCaprio, Pete Postlethwaite, Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo and Harold Perrineau.
The classic William Shakespeare story of the tragic love affair between Romeo and Juliet is given an MTV-style make-over for the young generation by Baz Luhrmann - while bravely keeping the original dialogue of the play. The feuding families of the Montagues and Capulets would never permit a marriage between two members of their family and so the doomed relationship of Romeo and Julliet leads to lots of gun-totting violence on the streets of modern day Miami. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes make an impressive young leading couple, but Luhrmann’s direction can rather over the top at times.

Six Days Seven Nights -  1998 - Directed by Ivan Reitman [Ghostbusters, Twins] - 98mins - Starring Harrison Ford, Anne Heche, David Schwimmer, Jacqueline Obradors and Danny Trejo.

The only aircraft available is flown by a grumpy drunk pilot Quinn Harris (Harrison Ford), but during the journey he is forced to crash land on a deserted island. There they get to spend six days and seven nights both fighting the elements and each other until help arrives. Of course, after a few days of the Harrison charm the whiney Schwimmer is nothing but a distant memory for the smitten Heche.

Once there he is troubled with sleepless nights as he’s haunted by memories of his wife. Jonah, concerned for his fathers well-being, calls a nationwide radio phone-in with Sam’s sad story which gets him dubbed ’Sleepless in Seattle’ while capturing the affections of the nations women. One such woman is Meg Ryan who is preparing for an unhappy marriage with dull Bill Pullman, but decides that Sam is actually the right man for her instead! It’s a wonderfully romantic story with Ryan and Hanks in their second film together making the perfect leading couple.

Titanic - 1997 - Directed by James Cameron (The Terminator) - 194mins - Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton and David Warner.
The film that made worldwide stars of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as well as winning 11 Oscars, breaking box office records and giving Celine Dion a hit record with “My Heart Will Go On”. It’s the story of love across the classes as a posh Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslet) falls for the charms of a young scallywag Jack Dawson (DiCaprio) on the ill-fated Titanic maiden voyage. The result is a classic tragic love story, which at over 3 hours long any fella who agrees to sit through with his girlfriend quite frankly deserves a snog at the end.
